New apps launch every week and many ask for your email, card or data on day one. This checklist takes about ten minutes and can save you money and trouble.
1. Who makes it?
Look for a real company name, a website, a contact address and a history. Anonymous apps with no support page deserve extra caution.
2. Read the permissions
An app should only ask for what it needs. A simple notes app that wants your contacts and location is a red flag.
3. Check the privacy policy
Look for what data is collected, who it is shared with and how to delete it.
4. Understand the pricing
Note the price after any free trial, whether it renews automatically and how to cancel. If cancelling is hard to find, that tells you something.
5. Read reviews beyond the stars
Read recent reviews, especially mid-range ones. Look for patterns such as billing problems or missing support.
6. Try it with low-risk data first
Use a separate email address and avoid sharing sensitive information until you trust the app.
7. Secure your account
Use a unique password and turn on two-step verification where available.
8. Check you can leave
Make sure you can export or delete your data and close your account.
